About Sextant Construction

Josh Williams, Owner

Sextant Construction began as a furniture design and fabrication enterprise, where I fashioned unique dressers, armoirs, credenzas and the like from recycled wooden wine crates from around the world. The idea was to integrate these wine crates into existing dresser frames, but I could not find any old dressers whose voids would adequately accept the crates. I knew I would have to build them from scratch, so I bought a saw.

Years and many lessons later, I set out to apply my furniture-building talents to the more daunting and practical path of renovating old Seattle homes. The objective from the start has always been to honor homes with craftsmanship and care, while applying contemporary, state of the art building standards to ensure a safe, environmentally friendly, stylishly-updated space.

The Sextant, as many mariners will know, was in its day the most technologically advanced instrument for helping sailors find their longitude in the world. For centuries before its invention, sailors could find their latitude based on the positions of stars on clear nights, but without knowing longitude those sailors and their crews would often, tragically, sail around in literal circles hoping for land, often without success.

I like to think of my construction philosophy as akin to the sailors who adopted this wild contraption and made themselves far better, more accurate, less costly, more efficient maritime stewards. It is important to me to enroll in continuing construction education, attend industry conferences frequently, and continually cross check what I know with what is new. Sextant Construction takes great pride in creating beautiful spaces using old tricks and the newest construction techniques in tandem.

My priority is making sure your experience is smooth and informed.

I work by referral only. I want you to have some idea of my work and my business from a source you trust, someone for whom I have worked previously who can attest to my abilities and the construction experience with Sextant Construction, before we meet.

I hope you enjoy the photos in this website. While the collection is not exhaustive, I believe there is adequate representation of my work within these photos.
